Stage 1
Stage 1 is a foundational course for beginners, covering essential skills in rigging, launching, recovery, ropework, clothing, equipment, capsize recovery, sailing techniques, and meteorology. You’ll engage in theory lessons, practical work on the hardstanding, and hands-on sailing to gain experience in sail trim, steering, and boat handling.
Stage 2

Stage 2 builds on Stage 1 and is designed for those with basic sailing knowledge. At this stage, you’ll tackle tasks with increased confidence and less supervision. In addition to the skills learned in Stage 1, you’ll also master more complex rules, including the Port/Starboard Right of Way rule.
Stage 3

Stage 3 elevates you from beginner to sailor. You should already be proficient at the Stage 1 and 2 levels. This stage focuses on consolidating your sailing skills, covering all points of sailing, and teaching new skills, including ‘man overboard’ recovery and an introduction to racing.
Stage 4

Stage 4 focuses more on double-handed sailing. You’ll have opportunities to crew and helm larger dinghies, learning to set up and sail your boat for various weather conditions. You’ll also gain competence in returning to a beach or jetty regardless of wind direction, learn to tie various knots, and understand tidal ebb and flow, synoptic charts, and the Beaufort Wind Scale.
